2. What is a cookie?
Cookies are currently used on virtually all websites, as they provide you with a given service and improve the experience for you as a user and customer.A cookie is a small text file that is stored on the user's IT-equipment (PC, tablet, smartphone, etc.) so the equipment can be recognised. Cookies can be used to compile statistics about users' utilisation of the website, and to optimise the site’s content. A cookie is a passive file, and thus cannot collect information from the user's computer or spread computer viruses or other malware. Some cookies are inserted by parties (so-called third parties) other than the web address (URL) stated in the browser's address bar. This can be general content, as well as analytical tools or nested comment fields. This means that cookies from parties other than the website owner are stored on the site. Some cookies – so-called ‘session cookies’ – are only stored on the user's IT equipment whilst the user has their browser open. Other cookies – so-called ‘persistent cookies’ – are stored for longer. When the user revisits a site, session cookies will be reset, while persistent cookies are typically renewed periodically.
